Happy Sunday friends! I hope you’ve been having a fun and exciting weekend.
We had a fun day around here yesterday for Chris’ birthday weekend. His birthday is on Tuesday but I planned a fun day for him yesterday that had us driving all over the place!
Chris knew we were heading down Santa Cruz way to pick up his birthday present (it was supposed to be a surprise but that cover got blown last weekend. Whelp.) but he didn’t know the stops I had planned for him.
First stop:- Steamer lane, Santa Cruz Surf Museum and dog beach.
Chris loves surfing. Like really, really loves it. So I thought it would be fun to take him to the famous Steamer Lane to check out the surfers for a while.
It really was so cool to see. The waves just rise up out of nowhere and the surfers were surfing so close to the cliff. Crazy! They were also really good.
Right at the headlands where Steamer Lane is, there is a tiny little surf museum set in an old lighthouse. It is so small and cute and filled with cool information on the history of surfing, old surfboards and great exhibits. It’s free to get in, they just ask for a donation if you can make one.
The museum was really cute and had lots of cool information to browse.
On the other side of the headland is a dog beach so as soon as we were done with the museum, we unleashed the hound for a quick run on the beach.
It was such a beautiful day in Santa Cruz yesterday, although just a little bit chilly. There were heaps of dogs out running around and there was a seal playing and fishing right off the shore!
It’s hard to see but he’s right there to the left of the black bird. You can see his shiny head poking out of the water. So cool! I’m always so excited when I see seals.
After our beach time, it was on to stop number 2!
Second Stop :- Gayle’s Bakery and Rosticceria
We made a quick pit stop at Gayle’s Bakery (supposedly the best in Santa Cruz) to pick up some birthday treats.
We drove with out little treats down into Capitola to sit by the water and
eat devour our deliciousness.
We shared a cream puff, downtowner bun with sugar and a chocolate macaroon. Delicious!
I had driven through Capitola with Chris before but I’d never really walked around there. I loved it there. Loved it, loved it. It kind of reminds me of Sausalito a little bit and I love it there too, so it makes sense! SO cute and beachy and colourful.
After our treats, it was time to pick up the birthday present!
Third Stop:- Present time!
I drove us out into factory heavy Watsonville to pick up Chris’s brand new surfboard! I contacted a shaper that Chris has used for a couple of his boards to have one custom-made for him.
And he loved it!
Success! So he did already know about it, but it was still exciting to actually pick it up. And we got to take a look around the shaping factory which was pretty cool.
By then we were hungry for some real food, so it was on to the next stop!
Fourth Stop:- Hula’s Island Grill!
If there’s one thing I know about my husband, it’s that he loves tropical drinks. In particular, the ‘Pain Killer’. So when I was researching where we should go for lunch, I was stoked to stumble across Hula’s Island Grill in Santa Cruz!
Chris with pain killer in hand.
I opted for the pineapple wine from Maui, and it was awesome!
We had a nice lunch and a couple of drinks before it was time to head home for a little bit of downtime before our last stop of the day – birthday dinner!
Final Stop:- Koi Palace!
Chris is a major Chinese food lover and has been talking about Koi Palace for a long time now. I like Chinese, but it’s definitely not my favourite so when Chris said he wanted to go to this place or a standard restaurant, I knew we should pick this place since I probably wouldn’t want to go on a normal night – ha!
As usual we way over-ordered and everything was delicious! The place was definitely quirky and there was a wedding going on in the room next to us that had some awful speeches which were pretty fun to listen to.
We had a fun night at dinner and finished off our birthday fun day with a couple of cocktails in Pacifica. All in all it was a really fun day!
And I think it’s safe to say that the present was a hit since this is what I found when I went to go to bed last night.
Yep, that’s the new surfboard in my spot. Replaced again!
Happy birthday weekend Chris!
